Ad Gefrin

Ad Gefrin is a unique cultural destination nestled in Wooler, Northumberland, where the rich tapestry of Anglo-Saxon history intertwines with the art of whisky distillation. Established in March 2023 by the Ferguson family, this £16 million project stands as a testament to the region's heritage and ambition, transforming a former haulage yard into a beacon of historical and economic revitalization.

The name "Ad Gefrin" harks back to the nearby royal palace at Yeavering, a significant 7th-century site where kings like Edwin of Northumbria once held court. The museum offers an immersive experience into this "Golden Age" of Northumbria, featuring a reconstructed Great Hall and a collection of rare Anglo-Saxon artifacts, some on loan from the British Museum.

Adjacent to the museum, the state-of-the-art distillery revives Northumberland's whisky-making tradition after a 200-year hiatus. Visitors can explore the distillation process and sample spirits like the inaugural Tácnbora blend and Thirlings Dry Gin, both inspired by local history and crafted with regional botanicals.

Beyond its historical and gastronomic offerings, Ad Gefrin serves as a community hub, hosting events, educational programs, and a bistro showcasing Northumbrian produce. With over 150,000 visitors since opening, it has significantly contributed to local tourism and economy.
